Portsmouth Badges Proving a Success

Getting a Portsmouth badge for your improving scores has not, it has to be admitted, been a big ceremonial affair. To an extent, we have to confess, that this has perhaps demeaned the significance of the badges. You present your evidence of score and we huddle in a corner to sort out your higher award. A fairly low key affair. It was never intended that a huge fuss would be made over the badges, as they are, after all, PERSONAL awards for achievement. However, over this Winter season, several archers have taken advantage of the scheme, and are justifiably proud of what they are achieving. For some archers the badges have been a great incentive and indicator of their progress in archery. We congratulate all those who have progressed so well using the scheme, and as the indoor season nears a close, hope that you will take advantage of the 252 awards. If you wish to know more about these awards please visit our Awards Pages on this web-site.

First NAC Peter Kenny Memorial Shoot

Our First Peter Kenny Memorial Shoot was held on Saturday 9th February 2013 at John Ashby Sports Hall, Moulton College, Northampton. Shooting a Worcester Round, the event was a fantastic success with 40 archers taking part. After the shoot, members enjoyed lunch, butties and tea in the cafeteria at the college. Trophies and medals were then presented to the winners by Peter’s widow, Yvonne, and son and daughter, Craig and Nicole. All had a great time in memory of Pete, and NAC felt proud to meet his family.

Pete Kenny joined Northampton Archery Club at the end of a beginners course in 1994. He asked to to have a go with a 85-95lb longbow, and despite being advised against this, insisted on shooting. He amazed Pete Bond and Paul Barrett as he shot into the gold at 30 yards – and not just once. Not content he then had a go at 60 yards and stunned the onlookers again when he struck gold again twice. Once a member Pete went from strength to strength shooting for NAC and at other competitions. Sadly Peter was taken from this life at early age and died from a heart attack whilst fishing. The Shoot on Saturday at Moulton will now be held as annual event. Our thanks go to all who helped making the day so great.

Another Great Day for the Portsmouth Series

Our third in the current season series of Portsmouth Club Competitions was held on Saturday 12 January and was another great success with Peter Bond presiding over affairs as Judge. Entries for the competition were snapped up as soon as the event was published and 34 archers took part. The event saw the return to our club of Paul Bond who still holds a Stafford County Record dating back to 1994. We hadn’t got a recent shot of him so we thought the picture above would cause appropriate embarrassment – or maybe not. Paul on this occasion shot a new Club Record of 573 in the Gents Recurve. Leigh Masters also set a new record in the Gents Flatbow with a score of 410, beating his old Club Record of 363. Vaughan Tucker set a new record in the Gents Traditional Recurve with 409 and Robyn Stevens (welcome back home) set a Ladies Senior Flatbow record of 251 (beating her old record of 227 as a junior). Our Records Officers also have to admit to missing a Club Record set by Callum Howes in the Gents under 12s recurve in the December Shoot when he scored 306. A few personal bests were also achieved and Portsmouth Badges are awaiting claims. Well done to you all. We must not however forget that the day was not just about high scores. Archery is for enjoyment as much as winning, and a great day was had by all – except the grumpy ones!
